Groundbreaking for new David L. Rice Library
|
University of Southern Indiana will host a groundbreaking at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1 to mark construction of the new David L. Rice Library south of the current library. The event is open to the public. The $27.5 million library will be the tallest building on campus, twice the size of the current library which was built in 1971. The current library was named the David L. Rice Library in 1992 honoring USI’s first president. Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed in spring 2006. General contractor is Deig Brothers Lumber and Construction Co. Designed by Edmund L. Hafer and Associates and Woollen Molzan & Partners, the brick and Indiana limestone structure will feature a rotunda at the front and a curved rear façade with floor-to-ceiling windows. The main floor will house circulation and reference areas and a reading room for newspapers and current journals. It will be equipped with fixed computer workstations and both wired and wireless access for laptops. Thirty group study rooms, two combination computer and library instruction labs, special reading rooms, and a variety of study spaces will be located in the building. A coffee shop will be located at the front of the building and several classrooms are planned for the lower level. An ice cream social for participants will follow the groundbreaking. |
