Summer social work programs
|
University of Southern Indiana will offer two continuing education programs for social workers at the New Harmony Inn Conference Center in June. “The Out-of-Sync Child: Recognizing and Coping with Sensory Processing Disorder” is planned from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 17. Carol Stock Kranowitz, a teacher for 25 years, will be the presenter. She is the author of The Out-of-Sync Child: Recognizing and Coping with Sensory Integration Dysfunction and its sequel, The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun: Activities for Kids with Sensory Integration Dysfunction. The hands-on workshop will explain how Sensory Processing Disorder, a neurological dysfunction, disrupts children’s work, play, fun, sleep, eating, learning, communication, relationships, and emotions. Kranowitz also will demonstrate dozens of activities appropriate for home, school, or office. They are "SAFE" activities: Sensory-motor, Appropriate, Fun, and Easy. A graduate of Barnard College, Kranowitz holds an M.A. in education and human development from George Washington University. She is on the professional advisory boards of Developmental Delay Resources and the Nonverbal Learning Disorders Association. The workshop registration fee is $124, including morning and afternoon breaks, lunch, CE recording, and materials. The registration deadline is Thursday, June 10. For additional information or registration, call USI Extended Services, 812/464-1989 or 800/467-8600. On June 15, Dr. Iris Phillips, USI associate professor of social work, will present a “Grant Writing Workshop” for social workers as well as employees of schools and other nonprofit organizations. The workshop, from noon to 4 p.m., will offer a hands-on skills-building approach to techniques for developing problem justification and legitimate needs for funds; using Internet resources; and writing clear proposals. For more than 12 years, Phillips has worked on projects funded by foundation, state, and federal monies, and in the past four years she has written and received grants for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Housing and Urban Development, and AmeriCorps. She holds a Ph.D. from University of Louisville. The registration fee is $50. Continuing education credit is available.
