Gurney’s “howlingly funny” Sylvia is at
The New Harmony Theatre through June 27

The New Harmony Theatre’s summer season continues through June 27 with Sylvia by A. R. Gurney, Jr. According to Backstage magazine, the play is a “howlingly funny” comedy that examines the relationships between man, woman, and man’s best friend. Sylvia is set in Manhattan, and its title character is a street-smart and lovable stray dog anxious for a new home. Greg is taking a break from his dead-end job in Central Park when he finds Sylvia and takes her home. Greg’s wife Kate is a teacher who envisions spending their empty nest years free of the responsibilities of children and pets. She isn’t crazy about Sylvia, who becomes a major bone of contention between the couple. Hilarious and touching complications ensue as Greg puts his love for Kate - and for Sylvia – to the test as they all try to find a compromise that will work. Broadway and New Harmony Theatre veteran Jenn Thompson plays Sylvia. New Harmony Theatre patrons may remember Thompson as Alma in last summer’s production of Eccentricities of a Nightingale. She is joined by Geoffrey Wade as Greg and Amelia White as Kate. Both Wade and White have numerous Broadway credits. David Christopher Wells rounds out the cast. All are members of Actors Equity Association, the union for professional actors and stage managers in the U.S. Sylvia is directed by New Harmony Theatre Artistic Director Scott LaFeber. “I’m delighted to be working with such a lovely and talented company,” said LaFeber. “I think our audiences will love Sylvia’s heartwarming hijinks.” The production team includes Vladimir Shpitalnik, scenic designer; Shan Jensen, costume designer; Jessica Trundy, lighting designer; Matthew Gibney, sound designer; and Bernita Robinson, stage manager. Sylvia runs June 11 – 27 at The New Harmony Theatre, Murphy Auditorium, 419 Tavern Street, New Harmony, Indiana. Performances are Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20, with discounts for seniors, students and groups.
