Fiddler on the Roof is on stage in July and August at Lincoln Amphitheatre. M. Christopher Boyer, managing director of Lincoln Amphitheatre said, “The Broadway revival of Fiddler continues to enjoy great success, and a national tour is planned for 2005. But southern Indiana residents and tourists can see a top-quality professional production of Fiddler with a much more affordable ticket price at Lincoln Amphitheatre this summer.”

Fiddler on the Roof’s story revolves around Tevye, an ebulliant Russian Jewish milkman trying to hold onto his religion, his traditions and his five daughters in a time of many changes. The score includes “Tradition,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” and “Sunrise, Sunset.” The New York Times described Fiddler on the Roof as “a musical filled with laughter and tenderness; it catches the essence of a moment in history with sentiment and radiance.”

Lincoln Amphitheatre Artistic Director Elliot Wasserman said, “We are thrilled that Michael Tourek, who played the lead role of Tevye for us last summer, is returning. This is one of the great roles in American musical theatre, and Michael turns in an outstanding performance.”

Wasserman continued, “I am really pleased with the entire cast. We’re very lucky to have attracted such talented singers and dancers from all over the country.” Performers in this summer’s production of Fiddler on the Roof represent several major cities, including New York, Miami, and Washington, DC, and 18 states in addition to Indiana including Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

The cast also features local and Indiana talent. Alax Traylor will be a freshman at Jasper High School this fall. She plays one of Tevye’s daughters, Schprintze. This is Traylor’s third season at the Amphitheatre; she previously performed in the 2003 production of Fiddler on the Roof and the 2002 production of The Sound of Music. Lexi Sosh, a 12-year old from Evansville, is also a veteran of the Lincoln Amphitheatre stage. Sosh plays Bielke, another of Tevye’s daughters. Dean Dorrell of Washington is best known for his portrayal of President Lincoln in Young Abe Lincoln, but he also plays the constable in Fiddler on the Roof. The cast also includes Eric Doades of French Lick, Christian Goad of Newburgh, Butler University student Kristin Gross of Evansville, and University of Southern Indiana students Jeannine Gamble of Newburgh, Erin Monahan of Petersburg, and Camille Ruckreigel of Jasper.

The artistic team for Fiddler on the Roof includes John Berst, music director; Joshua Dean, choreographer; Douglas Hubbell, scenic designer; Brent Foland, costume designer; Richard Kuykendall, lighting designer; and Rebecca Shubart, production stage manager.

Fiddler on the Roof runs in repertory with Young Abe Lincoln July 2 through August 7 at Lincoln Amphitheatre in Lincoln State Park, Lincoln City, Indiana. Performances are Wednesdays through Sundays at 7:30 p.m. central time. A matinee performance of Fiddler on the Roof is scheduled for Wednesday, July 18 at 1:30 p.m. central time. American Sign Language interpretation will be offered for the Thursday, July 15 performance.

Single tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors 60 and over, and $8 for children under 18. Sunday nights are Family Nights, when all tickets are $8. For the discounted price of $22, patrons can see both Young Abe Lincoln and Fiddler on the Roof. Season passes offer unlimited admission to all three shows throughout the season, and are available for $40 per person. To purchase tickets, call 1-800/264-4ABE.
