Examining issues of diversity
|
American Voices, a one-person show exploring the attitudes, beliefs, and hopes of Americans in the face of a new millennium, will be presented September 22 as part of THREADS Diversity Celebration Month at University of Southern Indiana. The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the University Center’s Carter Hall. Based on interviews with and suggestions from Americans across the country, the show stretches the issue of diversity to examine ability, socioeconomic status, eating disorders, race, religion, and sexual orientation. The production at USI will feature Monique Toliver, a native of Los Angeles, who has been performing on stage her entire life. Her recent television appearances include Moesha (UPN), The District (CBS), and Any Day Now (Lifetime) as well as national commercials and independent projects. During the performance Toliver will provide the “voices” of a Latino questioning the notion of “keeping it real,” an Arab American explaining her choice to “cover up,” and an Asian American pleading to be released from “model minority status and the college girl’s disease.” She also will portray an African American examining the injustices of the legal system, a Gay American exploring being gay and a Christian, and a Deaf American showing deafness as a culture not a handicap. Toliver will lead a discussion following the performance. American Voices was created and is presented by Will & Company, a Los Angeles-based theatre ensemble. The USI production is sponsored by the Multicultural Center; Recreation, Fitness, and Wellness; Religious Life; Residence Life; and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.
