Get your vote on!
|
Before you can vote in the 2004 General Election, you must register. If you are a U.S. citizens, 18 years of age or older by November 2, you can register to vote at the University of Southern Indiana during Blitz Week, September 21, 22, and 23. Current students, employees, and alumni, wearing “Get your vote on” t-shirts, will register students from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the three days of the blitz at tables in the Liberal Arts Center lobby, the Link of the Health Professions Center, and in the University Center. Amy Stockholm, a senior, is helping organize the campaign. She said, “Getting out the vote is a great passion of mine. In recent years a low percentage of people have exercised the right to vote. Many college students have opted not to participate. This year the election results will affect each of us.” She added, “We hope to get 500 students registered during Blitz Week.” The local campaign is modeled after the National Campus Voter Registration Project, which calls for colleges and universities to encourage widespread participation in the electoral process. The campus voter registration project states the mission of America’s more than 3,000 colleges and universities is the education of our nation’s next generation of leaders, and the shaping of civic involvement in all graduates. The Web siteCollege Vote.org is designed for college students and their educators to help gain a great understanding of an appreciation for the electoral process. An onlineVoters Guide Toolkit, includes information on election contests in Vanderburgh, Gibson, Posey, and Warrick counties. The final day to register to vote in Indiana is October 4, 2004. |
