Mariachi band Columbus Day concert at USI
|
The rich Latin sounds of Mariachi Zelaya will fill University of Southern Indiana’s Carter Hall October 11, when USI hosts its third annual traditional Celebration of Columbus Day. The hour-long program of music from Mexico and Central America will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the University Center. Based in Indianapolis, Mariachi Zelaya is comprised of performers representing Mexico, Nicaragua, Columbia, and Puerto Rico. “Spanish is such an important language in the country and becoming more and more important in Evansville and in the Tri-State area,” said Dr. Guillermo Latorre, USI professor of Spanish. “There is a growing Hispanic community, and we find this is a good opportunity to bring students, teachers, and the community together.” Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend the Celebration of Columbus Day. For more information, call Dr. Teresa Huerta, USI associate professor of Spanish, 812/465-7053. The Department of Foreign Languages, School of Liberal Arts, and USI Foundation are sponsoring the program. |
