USI conference reviewing voting accessibility
|
The University of Southern Indiana/Epi-Hab Center for Disability Studies will host “Vote 2004: Will people with disabilities be able to vote?” - an Americans with Disabilities Act audio conference - at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 19, 2004, in Room 1212 of the Science Center. The two-hour national conference will review accessibility issues for the election, including the status of accessibility in the voting process; strategies to determine if a polling place is accessible and what can be done if it is not; and what, if any, progress has been made toward implementation of the Help America Vote Act. Christina Galindo-Walsh, staff attorney for the National Association of Protection and Advocacy Services, will be the featured speaker. Her work focuses on Title II and III of the ADA and voting. The conference is a collaborative distance-learning project of the Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, New England, Northeast, Great Plains, Rocky Mountain, Southwest, and Pacific Regions Disability and Business Technical Assistance Centers. The event is free and open to the public. Continuing education credit is available for architects and community rehabilitation specialists. The conference will be of special interest to people with disabilities, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations. To arrange reasonable accommodation or for more information, contact Gary May, director of the USI/Epi-Hab Center for Disability Studies and associate professor of social work, 812/465-1694. |
