USI program examining roots of hate
|
The director of an award-winning documentary exploring issues of hate will screen the film, lead a discussion, and facilitate interactive exercises October 28, 2004 on the University of Southern Indiana campus. The event featuring Brent Scarpo and his Journey to a Hate Free Millennium will begin at 7 p.m. in the University Center’s Carter Hall. Scarpo is the founder of New Light Media, a nonprofit organization “dedicated to stimulating, educating, and impacting the world through multimedia works that celebrate diversity and honor the human spirit.” Journey to a Hate Free Millennium focuses on true stories, including the student shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado, the dragging death of James Byrd Jr. in Texas, and the beating death of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming. The film explores the roots of hate, how hate is taught and learned, and what an individual can do to take a stand against it. The USI Office of Student Development Programs, Foundation, Residence Life, Academic Affairs, Religious Life, the Multicultural Center, Delta Zeta, the Marketing Club, and Habitat for Humanity are sponsoring the free public program, which is part of THREADS Heritage Month. A reception will follow. |
