Author to discuss growing up gay
|
An award-winning author will share the story of his life in a program at 8 p.m. October 27, 2004 in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center on the University of Southern Indiana campus. Marc Adams’ autobiography, The Preacher’s Son, received the Silver Pen Award and was a Lambda Literary Award finalist. The book chronicles his life growing up gay as the son of a fundamentalist Baptist minister in rural Pennsylvania. After enduring a childhood of physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse, Adams chose to attend Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University, where he also was employed in the Student Recruiting/University Relations Department. The book explores his struggle to conform, his years as an ex-gay, and his eventual acceptance of his sexual orientation and coming out to his fundamentalist family. Adams also is the author of Light and Still Water, and is cofounder of HeartStrong Inc., a nonprofit organization for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students, both current and former, who attend religious schools, colleges, and universities. Spectrum USI, USI’s gay/straight alliance, and members of the Tri-state community are sponsoring the event that is part of THREADS Heritage Month. The program is free and open to the public. |
