Solarbron resident presenting $500 prize
|
Solarbron resident Louis Schewe is offering a $500 cash prize to the winner of a USI student essay contest on the topic: “Why Americans Don’t Read.” The avid reader and friend to campus bibliophiles, Schewe already has given thousands of books from his personal library to the University’s students. Now he is challenging both full- and part-time USI students of all disciplines to write on one of his favorite subjects: reading. In conjunction with Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honorary society, Schewe will award $500 to the author of the best essay. Essay’s must be a minimum of four pages in length (2,000 words) and should be argumentative, persuasive, or analytical. Although the essays should not be research papers, cited documentation of material within the essays will be acceptable. Eric von Fuhrmann, associate professor of English, suggests student writers pretend to be lawyers arguing a case in front of a jury. “It’s a level playing field,” he added. “We are going to be as receptive to accounting, chemistry, and P.E. majors as we are English majors.” Schewe and a panel of USI faculty will judge the essays. The winner will be announced January 7, 2005. Essays should be turned in to von Fuhrmann, Room 3031 in the Liberal Arts Center, no later than December 6, 2004. For more information, call von Fuhrmann, 812/464-1749, or contact any member of Sigma Tau Delta. Faculty are encouraged to inform their students of this opportunity. |
