AIDS rally and candlelight vigil on December 1
|
Spectrum, the gay-straight alliance at the University of Southern Indiana, will hold an AIDS Rally and Candlelight Vigil at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1 in the University Conference Center in the University Center at USI as part of the World AIDS Day observation. World AIDS Day is an international day of action on HIV and AIDS which takes place every year on December 1. The rally will include live music and guest speakers addressing how AIDS affects the region including individuals who are living with HIV. Spectrum will be collecting donations for The Tri-State Alliance (TSA) Christmas Project. The TSA works with area community organizations to secure donations of food, money, and gifts to more than 200 families who have been affected by AIDS. TSA also seeks out businesses and groups that are willing to sponsor a family during the holiday season. David Jaquess, assistant professor of psychology, said research efforts have yielded advances in treatment for HIV and AIDS, but there is a growing population of AIDS-infected individuals in the Tri-State, particularly among young women of color and their children. The focus of World AIDS Day 2004 is on women and girls with HIV and AIDS. The campaign, with the tag line, “Have you heard me today?” explores how gender inequality fuels the AIDS epidemic. The program is free and open to the public. |
