Strategic Writing class earns grant and helps young girls
|
University of Southern Indiana students in a fall 2004 Strategic Writing class wrote and received a community service mini-grant from Indiana Campus Compact to help the YMCA Diamondettes (girls aged 7 to 11) learn how to write letters to the American soldiers in Iraq, create banners, prepare care packages, and assemble a scrapbook of current events from newspaper articles for the troops to read. Near the end of the class in November, the writing students hosted an educational and fun event for the YMCA girls. Goals of the event were to help build self-esteem among the girls so they would realize they can make a difference in the world, and to help a small number of troops in Iraq by boosting their morale and providing them with some needed personal supplies. The YMCA Diamondettes is a twice-weekly after school initiative of the YMCA. It promotes healthy choices and self-esteem for young girls. The USI course is taught by Dr. Tamara Wandel, assistant professor of public relations. The course focuses on planning and preparing goal-oriented messages, and the selection of appropriate delivery techniques to communicate with an organization’s target publics. |
