USI to host “Historical Properties and the ADA”
“Historical Properties and the ADA,” an audio conference on Tuesday, January 18, at the University of Southern Indiana, will bring to light another issue in the debate over altering historical places to comply with the law.

J. Aaron McCullough of the Disability Law Resource Project (DLRP), Independent Living Research Utilization (ILRU), of Houston, Texas, will explain how the Americans with Disabilities Act applies to historical buildings during the conference from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Science Center, Room 1212 (SC 1212), at the University of Southern Indiana.

The presentation will focus on the law and the debate between architects and preservationists. It should also be of interest to local government officials, small business owners, people with disabilities, and other community members.

J. Aaron McCullough is a legal specialist for the DLRP. He produces materials on disability law issues, provides training on all aspects of the ADA, and fields technical assistance requests.

He earned his law degree from the University of Houston Law Center in December of 2000, and became a member of the State Bar of Texas in the spring of 2001. He is pursuing a MSW program with a political concentration at the University of Houston.

His recent research interests include the impact of the "No Child Left Behind" policy on the treatment of students with disabilities; accessibility of the polling place and process; architectural liability under the ADA and FHA; and the development of international law regarding the rights of people with disabilities.
