Diane Clements, executive director of the Evansville City-County Human Relations Commission, will be the guest speaker at the University of Southern Indiana’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance, set for 11 a.m. Monday, January 17, in Carter Hall in the University Center.

Prior to her appointment to the commission by Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel in January of 2004, the UCLA graduate was program manager of the Evansville Black Coalition, Inc.

She serves on the executive committee of the Indiana Consortium of State and Local Human Rights Agencies; the Ivy Tech Human Services advisory board; the Evansville Police Department recruitment committee; and the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Agency advisory board.

She also is chairperson of the United Way of Southwestern Indiana allocations cabinet panel and an advisor to the Evansville Minority Tobacco Prevention and Cessation (Empty Pack) Project.

She was the recipient of the NAACP Life Time Community Advocate Award in 2003.

Pamela F. Hopson, director of the USI Multicultural Center, said that Clements was chosen to speak at the observance because of her dedication to human rights.

“When you look at the philosophy of what Martin Luther King stood for and you take a look at her position dealing with the City-County Human Relations Commission, you’re dealing with the rights of individuals, and that’s something King fought for during his lifetime,” she said.

Learn to Build Team Spirit

Students can learn how to fire up their student organizations and hone their leadership skills at the “Leadership USI: Engendering Team Spirit” workshop.

The workshop, set for 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, January 22, in Carter Hall, will feature Doug Cureton, the founder of CreativiTEAM, a human relations consulting firm with an emphasis on team-building.

Cureton spent over 15 years in higher education administration in student activities, residential life, and student life before joining the Anti-Defamation League “A World of Difference” Institute, for which he is a training consultant.

The New York City-based institute seeks an end to prejudice and discrimination through Civil Rights advocacy.

Cureton also designs and delivers programs to major corporations, community agencies and law enforcement agencies, including DuPont, AT&T, the American Red Cross, the FBI and the CIA.

Registration for the workshop is free but limited to 100 students, each of whom will receive a copy of “Let Your Leadership Speak: How to Lead and be Heard,” for which Cureton wrote the chapter, “On Team Spirit.”
