Lincoln Amphitheatre presents An Evening with Abraham Lincoln
|
An Evening with Abraham Lincoln, a one-man show written and performed by Dean Dorrell, will be staged on Saturday, January 29 at 8 p.m. at USI Theatre, 3001 Igleheart Avenue in Evansville. The performance is a fund raiser for Lincoln Amphitheatre’s 2005 season. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased by calling the USI Theatre box office at 812-422-3970, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased at the door beginning one hour before the performance. Dorrell was named “Best Abe Lincoln” by the Association of Lincoln Presenters in 2002. He has portrayed President Lincoln for schools, Civil War reenactments, museums, historical societies, and festivals. Dorrell plays President Lincoln in the musical drama Young Abe Lincoln at Lincoln Amphitheatre each summer. In An Evening with Abraham Lincoln, Lincoln tells the story of his life, including his early life in Kentucky and southern Indiana, his adult years in Springfield, Illinois, and his presidency. Dorrell said, “I’ve used Lincoln’s own words, taken from speeches and his writings, as much as possible.” Christopher Boyer, managing director of Lincoln Amphitheatre, said, “Dean has meticulously researched this play and done a wonderful job of weaving together Lincoln’s own words to offer audiences a real glimpse at one of the most fascinating men in American history. His portrayal of Lincoln is never dry or academic, but is professional, funny and moving. We are honored to present it.” Dorrell will offer two abbreviated performances of the play for area schools on Friday, January 28, 2005. At 10 a.m., he will offer a 25-minute performance for elementary school students, and at 1 p.m., he will present a 40-minute performance for junior high and high school students. Dorrell will answer students’ questions after each performance. According to L. Rex Myers, Washington High School history teacher and Daviess County historian, “Mr. Dorrell's…Lincoln costume and awesome physical appearance make Lincoln believable. His question and answer sessions…indicate a depth of Lincoln knowledge that adds to his performance. I recommend this program to all junior high, secondary, college and adult groups.” Tickets for the school performances are $5. Teachers who are interested in bringing students to these performances should call the USI Theatre box office at 422-3970. |
