Annual Bluebird Trail Cleanup
|
Dr. Charles Price, professor of science education, will lead the 10th annual USI Bluebird Trail Cleanup at 9 a.m. Saturday, February 26. There are 50 bluebird houses on campus. Price said the birds usually start nesting in March, and the young are born in April. A biology or science education major gathers nesting data from the houses each year. Approximately 130 fledglings have survived to young adulthood in the years since the program began. “Bluebirds will only nest in cavities,” he said. “Natural cavities are not in abundance like they were many years ago.” Participants help clear the houses of debris, and sometimes even see a bluebird, during the cleanup. The Bluebird Trail is about 2 ½ miles around the perimeter of campus. For a map, go to http://www.usi.edu/bluebird/. Participants will meet at the Grimes Haus on the Bluebird trail at 9 a.m. For more information, contact Price at 812/464-1939 or cprice@usi.edu. |
