Highest beam to be set March 3 on Rice Library
|
A “topping out” ceremony for the new David L. Rice Library at the University of Southern Indiana will take place at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2005. Topping out celebrations are a tradition in construction projects. When the uppermost steel beam is put into place and the construction has reached its highest point, a topping out ceremony marks the event. Members of the Board of Trustees, President H. Ray Hoops, staff of Rice Library, members of Student Government Association, and architects and contractors will add their signatures to the top beam before it is hoisted in place. The beam will be available to autograph by 12:30 p.m. and will be located west of the construction on a sidewalk between the University Center and the Technology Center. An American flag also will be on the beam. Construction of the new David L. Rice Library started in June 2004. The four-story building, located south of the current library, will be twice the size of the current library. The $27.5 million building is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy by fall 2006. |
