Religious Life to sponsor Religion and the Media discussion panel

USI Religious Life is sponsoring a panel discussion, Religion and the Media, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, in Mitchell Auditorium, in the Health Professions Center at the University of Southern Indiana. The panel will be discussing the interaction between religion and the media, how religion is portrayed and covered by the media, and how coverage impacts the public’s view of religion. The discussion will be moderated by Paul Leingang, director of communications for the Catholic Diocese of Evansville. Panelists include: • Catholic theologian Monsignor Lorenzo Albacete, who writes columns for The New York Times Magazine and the Italian weekly, Tempi. He has been a featured guest on PBS documentaries, Frontline, The Charlie Rose Show, CNN, and Peter Jennings Live. His most recent book is God at the Ritz: Attraction to Infinity. • Emmy and Edward R. Murrow award-winning reporter Brad Byrd, who has been lead news anchor for WEHT News 25 for 28 years. Byrd has been involved in broadcast journalism since the age of 18 and has more than 30 years of experience. In addition to his duties at the anchor desk at 6 and 10 p.m., Byrd has covered stories with Evansville connections in Eastern Europe, Washington D.C., New York • Philip Elliott, religion reporter for the Evansville Courier and Press. From abuse in the Catholic church to evangelicals’ influence in politics, Elliott’s job is to keep informed about denominational infighting, financial challenges and religious marketing. His interests include cultural trends, faith-based funding and the intersections of faith, values, politics and policy. • Mohammed Hussain, local pediatrician, past president of the Islamic Center of Evansville, and regional speaker on Islam and the world post-9/11.
