SGA Awards
|
The Student Government Association presented its Faculty, Staff, and Administrator of the Year Awards and Spirit of the Eagle Awards at the 2005 Student Leadership Awards and Recognition Ceremony held in April. Eric Sharp, president of SGA, said recipients of the Faculty, Staff and Administrator of the Year Awards are people who go out of their way to help students, contributing to the positive atmosphere at USI. Faculty Member of the Year was awarded to Peter Cashel-Cordo, associate professor of economics. In nominations, he was described as “a highly effective instructor who inspires genuine learning,” “a dedicated, knowledgeable advisor,” and “a published researcher.” In presenting Cashel-Cordo’s award, Sharp also acknowledged that the professor has committed time to serving on several University committees, including the Faculty Senate and the University Honors Council, and finds time to volunteer for organizations in the community. Kim Schauss, administrative clerk in the Office of the Registrar, was awarded Staff Member of the Year. In presenting the award, SGA Vice President Mandy Wagner said, “Students who come to the Registrar’s Office are usually stressed and trying to get schedules and such worked out. Our honoree welcomes them with a smile and tries her best to get things straightened out. If there is a problem with a student’s schedule, she will call the student’s advisor or the chair of the Department to find answers. No matter how frustrated or confused the student may be, she maintains an optimistic disposition.” Administrator of the Year was awarded to Robert Ruble, former vice president of Business Affairs, who is now serving the University as a professor of engineering. “The person who nominated this year’s recipient cited many ways this friendly administrator goes out of his way to help students,” Sharp said. “This year, he volunteered to take part in Freshman Move-in Day as well as the Bonding through Books Program to interact more with the students at our university. He keeps a smile on his face and is always willing to listen to the concerns of students.” The Spirit of the Eagle Awards are for individuals or groups who have brought regional, state, or national recognition to themselves and USI. The student winner was Nick Lindy, president of the Activities Programming Board. Lindy was praised for his contributions to APB events, including the Gavin DeGraw concert in fall 2004. The student organization winner was the men’s basketball team and Coach Rick Herdes. “This team won the GLVC regional championship this year with an outstanding league record of 18-2 and 27-5 overall. They make the crowd roar, they make newspaper headlines, and they make USI recognized for its terrific athletic program,” said Sharp. Tina Kern-Raibley was awarded the Spirit of the Eagle Alumni Award. She is a former member of the USI Board of Trustees and serves on many University committees, including the Parents and Family Advisory Board and the Alumni Council. She also is involved in serving community organizations. “Wherever she goes, she carries the Spirit of the Eagle, eager to share her knowledge of USI,” Wagner said. The final award is for faculty, staff, or administrators who embody the Spirit of the Eagle, and it was given to Linda Bennett, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, “who works tirelessly to enhance the academic progress of USI,” Sharp said. “Wherever she goes, she carries enthusiasm for our university. She represents USI well at many conferences across the country and encourages the people she meets to stop by if they are in the area for some good Southern Hospitality.” Each spring, SGA recognizes individuals and groups for their excellence and dedication to the University. Students, faculty, staff, and administrators make nominations for this awards and members of Student Government vote on the recipients to be honored. |
