USI announces its last season as producer at Lincoln Amphitheatre
|
H. Ray Hoops, president of the University of Southern Indiana, announced today that because of budgetary constraints, this summer’s productions of Young Abe Lincoln and South Pacific will be the last USI produces at Lincoln Amphitheatre. The University of Southern Indiana has served as the producer of the summer theatre seasons at Lincoln Amphitheatre since 1989. Hoops said that he is “proud of USI’s role in providing high-quality musical theatre productions and celebrating Indiana’s Lincoln heritage for thousands of visitors over the past 16 years.” He noted his appreciation for the partnership USI has enjoyed with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the staff of Lincoln State Park, and the members of the Lincoln Boyhood Drama Association in producing the Amphitheatre seasons. In addition to the annual production of Young Abe Lincoln, Lincoln Amphitheatre has produced many Broadway favorites over the years, including Big River, Oklahoma!, The Music Man, The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, and this summer’s South Pacific. Elliot Wasserman, USI associate professor of theatre and artistic director of Lincoln Amphitheatre said, “Many young performers have made their professional theatre debuts at Lincoln Amphitheatre and gone on to great success, performing on Broadway and in television and film. These success stories are a lasting legacy of USI’s time as producer of the Amphitheatre’s summer seasons.” According to Hoops, the Indiana General Assembly has supported the production of Young Abe Lincoln with an annual appropriation since 1989. He expressed appreciation for the efforts of legislative leadership and the southern Indiana legislative delegation for providing this important funding. Hoops stated, “USI’s association with the Lincoln story and the Amphitheatre will remain an important part of USI’s history. In keeping with its mission of supporting education, social and economic growth, and civic and cultural awareness in southwestern Indiana, USI will continue to serve this region in many other ways.” In addition to Young Abe Lincoln and South Pacific, Lincoln Amphitheatre will present a series of eight popular music concerts this summer. |
