2005-2006 B/MD scholarship recipients

The University of Southern Indiana’s 2005-2006 Baccalaureate/Doctor of Medicine Scholarship recipients are Priyanka Arshanapalli of Crown Point, Sandeep Guram of Newburgh, Heather Keefer of Santa Claus, Nathan Oakley of New Harmony, Sarah O’Donoghue of Newburgh, and Priscilla Walker of Indianapolis.

Six students are selected for the scholarship each year. The University provides full tuition waivers for the undergraduate portion of the program. Completion of the undergraduate degree and fulfillment of the requirements for the program will result in the student directly entering the Evansville Center for Medical Education of Indiana University School of Medicine, located on the USI campus.

Priyanka Arshanapalli, the daughter of Bala and Vidya Arshanapalli of Crown Point, graduated first in her class at Merrillville High School. In addition to the B/MD scholarship, she is a 2005-2006 Presidential Scholar. Presidential Scholarships cover tuition, fees, books, and room and board for a full four years and are currently valued at $42,000. Priyanka was junior class secretary, senior class vice president, and a member of the National Honor Society. She volunteered at the Lake County Public Library, Indiana University Northwest, Davenport University, Saint Anthony Medical Center, and the Northwest Indiana Hindu Cultural Center.

Sandeep Guram, the son of Sudher and Mythili Guram of Newburgh, attended Castle High School, where he was president of the science club, vice president of the National Honor Society, co-captain of the speech/forensics team, captain of the science academic team, and won a second place medal at the Indiana Science Olympiad. He played varsity tennis and was tennis representative to the student athletic council. He was a lab volunteer at the Evansville Center for Medical Education for two summers.

Heather Keefer, the daughter of Randy and Verdonna Keefer of Santa Claus, was a member of the National Honor Society, science and math teams, pep club, Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), Spanish Club, and the varsity swim team while attending Heritage Hills High School. She was employed as a lifeguard by the high school, tutored other students through the National Honor Society tutoring program, and spent a semester as a teacher’s aid in a remedial math class.

Nathan Oakley is a graduate of North Posey High School. The son of Curtis and Annette Oakley, he was a leader in the math and interdisciplinary academic teams, German Club president, a member of the National Honor Society, and manager of the varsity football team. He was chosen as a mentor for junior high school students through the peers program and as a delegate to the Anti-Tobacco Youth Summit. He was chief of the cadet fire program of the Wadesville Fire Department, having served as assistant chief and training and communications officer. He was on the High Honor Roll all four years.

Sarah E. O’Donoghue attended The Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities, a two-year residential high school for academically gifted Indiana high school juniors and seniors located at Ball State University. The daughter of Judy and John O’Donoghue of Newburgh, Sarah was involved in student government, speech team, science club, foreign language club, poker club, SADD, rock climbing club, and thespians. She volunteered at the Chandler Public Library and was employed at the Ohio Township Public Library.

Priscilla Walker, the daughter of Daniel and Lisa Walker of Indianapolis, attended Perry Meridian High School, where she won the Marion County Principal’s Award, was on the “A” honor roll, won first division placement at the ISSMA state vocal competition, and lettered in varsity cross country and track and field. She was captain of both the cross country and track and field teams during her senior year. She also was a member of the Advanced Show Choir, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, student council, speech team, and National Honor Society, and was active in theatrical productions. She was a Sunday School teacher from sixth grade through her senior year, and volunteered for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and at a convalescent home.
