Presidential Scholars for 2005-2006

The University of Southern Indiana has announced the recipients of the Presidential Scholarships for the 2005-2006 academic year. Ten Indiana high school students ranked first or second in their senior class at the end of the fall semester are selected for the competitive scholarships each year. The scholarships cover tuition, fees, books, and room and board for a full four years. Each scholarship is currently valued at $42,000. The 2005-2006 recipients are Priyanka Arshanapalli, Crown Point; Sarah Baysden, Shelbyville; Aafke Bleecker, Lanesville; Danielle Cundiff, Dana; Sara Elpers, Evansville; Jillian Freeman, Albion; Renee Hitch, Fredericksburg; Andrew Jones, Rockport; Leslie McCrary, Laconia; and Jacklyn Neumann, Wadesville. Priyanka Arshanapalli, the daughter of Bala and Vidya Arshanapalli of Crown Point, plans to major in biology/pre-med and business administration. In addition to the Presidential Scholarship, Priyanka is a recipient of the Baccalaureate/Doctor of Medicine Scholarship, which offers full tuition for undergraduate work and a provisional seat in the Evansville Center for Medical Education of Indiana University School of Medicine. While enrolled at Merrillville High School, Priyanka was junior class secretary, senior class vice president, and a member of the National Honor Society. The daughter of Dalton “Bud” and Virginia Baysden of Shelbyville, Sarah Baysden was captain of the track team and a member of the Latin Club and National Honor Society at Shelbyville High School. She participated in cross-country and soccer, and also volunteered for the Vital Bridges AIDS Center and the Hoosier Riverwatch Adopt-A-River program. She plans to major in biology/pre-med. Aafke Bleecker was president of her senior class at Lanesville Junior-Senior High School, was active in French Club, and participated in the school’s Renaissance Steering Committee all four years, serving as chairman her senior year. She was involved in the Academic Bowl all four years, serving as captain her senior year. She was a member of the All-State Choir and was the school’s mascot her senior year. The daughter of Mark and Edith Bleecker of Lanesville, she plans to major in secondary education. The daughter of Daniel and Sue Etta Cundiff of Dana, Danielle Cundiff attended South Vermillion High School. She was president of the freshman class and student council president her senior year, and was active in the English, math and spelling academic teams, worked on the student newspaper, and was in theatrical productions all four years. She plans to major in biology/pre-med. Sara Elpers, the daughter of Eugene and Carol Elpers of Evansville, is a graduate of Bosse High School, where she was on the speech, math, science, and social studies academic teams, and was a member of the National Honor Society and the pep and Spanish clubs. She plans to major in elementary education and English with an emphasis in creative writing. Jillian Freeman is the daughter of Jim and Deb Freeman of Albion. She attended Central Noble High School, where she was a leader in student government, a member of the National Honor Society, and on the varsity basketball and baseball teams. She also was involved in theater and 4-H. She plans to major in biology/pre-optometry. The daughter of W. Walton and Jane Hitch of Fredericksburg, Renee Hitch plans to major in international studies with a minor in business marketing. A graduate of West Washington High School, she was French Club president, senior class treasurer, treasurer (junior year) and president (senior year) of the National Honor Society, and captain of the Academic Bowl team. She also was in band and a member of the spirit club. Andrew L. Jones, the son of Edward and Dee Ann Jones of Rockport, attended South Spencer High School. He was a leader in student council all four years, serving as president his senior year, and was a member of the spirit club all four years, serving as secretary his senior year. He is considering majoring in nursing and biology. South Central Senior High School graduate Leslie McCrary is the daughter of Terry and Kathy McCrary of Laconia. Leslie was a member of the art club; concert, marching, and pep band; student council; and National Honor Society. She was on the staff of the student newspaper her junior and senior years and played tennis all four years. She is undecided about her major. Jacklyn Marie Neumann, the daughter of Michael and Katrina Neumann of Wadesville, is a graduate of North Posey High School, where she was student council president her freshman, sophomore, and junior years, and vice president her senior year. She was president of her class all four years, and president of the National Honor Society her senior year. She was a member of the German, pep, and varsity clubs. She played volleyball, softball, and basketball, and was on the track and field team her junior and senior year. She plans to major in biology/pre-med and mathematics. A Presidential Scholar must maintain a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester to remain eligible for the scholarship. The Presidential Scholar must also maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale) for 62 credit hours attempted, at least a 3.4 cumulative GPA for the remaining credit hours. The Presidential Scholarship program began in 1988 to attract outstanding Indiana students to USI. The Presidential Scholarships are funded through private gifts to the USI Foundation. |
