RopeWalk presenting free public events RopeWalk Writers Retreat, a program of the University of Southern Indiana, will offer a variety of free readings and lectures to the public in June. The annual retreat, which will be held June 12-18 this year, brings writers to New Harmony, Indiana, to attend workshops, write, critique the work of others, and confer privately with prominent authors. Faculty for the 2005 RopeWalk Writers Retreat are Stephen Dobyns and Lynn Emanuel in poetry; Sigrid Nunez in fiction; and Laura Wexler in creative nonfiction. Speer Morgan is the guest artist. RopeWalk Alumni Reading, 2 p.m., Thralls Opera House. Stephen Dobyns Reading, 7 p.m., Atheneum/Visitors Center. A reception will follow. Dobyns is the author of 10 books of poems, 20 novels, and a book of essays on poetry, Best Words, Best Order. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships. He is a guest writer for the San Diego Weekly Reader and is on the faculty of the Warren Wilson College MFA for Writers program. Monday, June 13 Laura Wexler Reading, 7 p.m., Atheneum/Visitors Center. A reception will follow. Wexler is the author of Fire in a Canebrake: The Last Mass Lynching in America. Her essays and articles have appeared in DoubleTake, The Oxford American, and The Utne Reader. She has taught creative nonfiction at the University of Georgia and The College of Notre Dame, and currently teaches in the part-time graduate program in creative writing at Johns Hopkins University and is senior editor at Style Magazine. Tuesday, June 14 Sigrid Nunez Craft Lecture, 9:30 a.m., Barn Abbey. Laura Wexler Craft Lecture, 1:30 p.m., Barn Abbey. Speer Morgan Reading, 7 p.m., Atheneum/Visitors Center. A reception will follow. Morgan has authored a collection of short stories, Frog Gig and Other Stories, and five novels, including The Freshour Cylinders, for which he won an American Book Award. His work has appeared in The Atlantic Monthly and other publications. He is a professor of English at the University of Missouri and was on the faculty of the Paris Writers Workshop in 2000. Wednesday, June 15 Sigrid Nunez Reading, 7 p.m., Atheneum/Visitors Center. A reception will follow. Nunez is the author of four novels, including A Feather on the Breath of God and For Rouenna. She has received a Whiting Writer's Award and two awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She also has won a 2005 Berlin Prize in Literature from the American Academy in Berlin. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has taught at Amherst College, Smith College, Columbia University, the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. Thursday, June 16 Lynn Emanuel Craft Lecture, 9:30 a.m., Atheneum/Visitors Center. Stephen Dobyns Craft Lecture, 1:30 p.m., Atheneum/Visitors Center. Friday, June 17 Lynn Emanuel Reading, 6 p.m., Atheneum/Visitors Center. Emanuel is the author of three collections of poetry, Hotel Fiesta, The Dig, and Then, Suddenly, and the former director of the University of Pittsburgh writing program. She received two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, the National Poetry Series Award, and the Eric Matthieu King Award from the Academy of American Poets.
