EPO's Celebrate America! concert will kick off concert series with a bang
![]() This summer’s Live at Lincoln Amphitheatre concert series will kick off with a bang – literally – during the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra’s "Celebrate America!" concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 29 at Lincoln Amphitheatre in Lincoln State Park. The orchestra, led by Music Director Alfred Savia, will perform patriotic songs such as “The Star Spangled Banner,” “American Salute,” the theme from The Patriot, “God Bless America,” and others. High school bands from Heritage Hills, Southridge, Jasper, and Boonville high schools will accompany the orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” with cannon fire provided by the Indiana National Guard, 1st Battalion, 163rd Artillery. The Memorial Day celebration of our nation’s heritage also will include a salute to the United States Armed Forces, and a recitation of the Gettysburg address by Dean Dorrell, the actor who portrays President Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Amphitheatre outdoor drama, "Young Abe Lincoln." Civil War re-enactors will perform during the suite from "Gettysburg." The audience will be treated to highlights from Lincoln Amphitheatre’s production of "South Pacific." Cast members will sing hits from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, including “Younger than Springtime,” “Bali Hai,” “A Wonderful Guy,” and “Some Enchanted Evening.” Joey Zahn, a violinist and winner of the 2005 Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra Young Artists Competition, also will perform. Wayne Hart, chief meteorologist from WEHT 25, will be the master of ceremonies. Tickets are $20, with a special price of $8 for children under 18.
