Remembering the title run
Everyone loves to relive special moments in their lives. The USI 1995 NCAA Division II National Championship men’s basketball team received their chance on June 10, 2005.In conjunction with the annual USI\Varsity Club Golf Scramble, the national championship team re-united for an evening to revel and tell stories about that special season. In attendance were former Head Coach Bruce Pearl, now the head coach at the University of Tennessee; current USI Head Coach Rick Herdes, who was an assistant under Pearl; Stan Gouard, the former two-time NABC Division II Player of the Year who is now an assistant coach at Indiana State University; Chad Gilbert, who is the Jeffersonville High School girls’ head coach; USI Assistant Coach Marc Hostetter; Joel Thomas, who is a stay-at-home father; Neil Coyle, who is the West Washington (Indiana) boys’ basketball coach; Brian Huebner, an insurance producer; and Ken Troutman, who went on to become a dentist in Jasper, Indiana. USI won the national title in dramatic fashion in March of 1995. The Screaming Eagles overcame a pair of first half 22-point deficits and a poor first half to defeat the University of California-Riverside, 71-63. The squad outscored Cal-Riverside 12-1 in the final four minutes of the game to earn the University’s first national championship. The Friday night reunion capped off two days of festivities. The golf scramble, which was expected to raise an estimated $25,000, also featured Chancellor Dugan, former USI women’s basketball coach and current head coach at Florida Atlantic University, and Beth Watson, former USI women’s softball head coach and current top assistant coach at the University of Central Florida. The money raised from the scramble was earmarked for scholarships, fifth year aid for seniors, and other Varsity Club projects. |
