New freshman were welcomed to the University Friday morning during the New Student Convocation. The ceremony begins the new academic year. It was attended by more freshmen than in any other year in University history.

Dr. Linda L. M. Bennett, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, told the students, “It is a significant privilege for me to stand here today and give greetings to you as you start one of the most important journeys of your life – your college education.”

The academic world, she told them “is a world that, if you let it, can change your life.”

Bennett noted that the University offers students an opportunity to better themselves, but whether students take that challenge is up to them.

“That depends on your dedication,” she said, “but the faculty and staff of the University will always be here to help you.”

Keynote speaker and Vanderburgh County Sheriff Brad Ellsworth ’81 agreed.

“Get to know these people,” he said, referring to faculty and administrators in full academic regalia.

“Their work and their lives are devoted to seeing you succeed,” he added. “They are here for you. Take advantage of that.”

Dr. Robert Parrent, vice president for Student Affairs, said, “If there is a theme for convocation, it is about opportunities – and the importance of recognizing and nurturing one’s potential to make a difference.”

Dr. Parrent discussed the history of the University and the many USI students “who have traversed and been transformed on this campus, and have done so magnificently.”

“You can start from USI and go on to succeed anywhere in the world,” he said. “The opportunities are endless.”

He encouraged the class of 2009 “to take every opportunity you can to continue the tradition of academic excellence and commitment to humankind that is the hallmark of a USI education.”

The New Student Convocation is sponsored by the Office of Student Development.
