Fall 2005 RopeWalk Reading Series features Persian poetry

Richard Davis will read his translations of Persian poetry at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 22, in Carter Hall, in the University Center. The RopeWalk Reading is being held in conjunction with “The Ram in the Thicket” colloquium on the Middle East, to be held the following day, Friday, September 23, in Carter Hall.

Davis is professor of Persian and chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at Ohio State University. Born in Portsmouth, England, he holds a Ph.D. in medieval Persian literature from the University of Manchester and an M.A. and B.A. in English literature from the University of Cambridge. He has taught at the University of Tehran in Iran; Durham University and the University of Newcastle in the U.K., and the University of California-Santa Barbara. As author, translator, or editor, he has produced 22 books. In addition to academic works, he has published translations from Italian and Persian, and seven books of poetry.

A second reading in the series will feature Tom Hunley at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 20, in Kleymeyer Hall in the Liberal Arts Center. Hunley is an assistant professor of English at Western Kentucky University, and editor of Steel Toe Press. He is the author of the poetry collections The Tongue (Wind Publications 2004), and Still, There’s a Glimmer (WordTech Editions 2004). His manuscript, My Life as a Minor Character, recently won a chapbook contest and was published by Pecan Grove Press. Towards a Rhetoric of Poetry Writing Instruction, a book of essays, has been accepted by the British publisher Multilingual Matters, LTD. Hunley has a Ph.D. in English from Florida State University, an M.F.A. in creative writing from Eastern Washington University, and a B.A. in English from the University of Washington.

The RopeWalk Reading Series is made possible through the support of RopeWalk Writers Retreat, the Southern Indiana Review, USI Society for Arts & Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts, Indiana Arts Commission, and USI Student Writers' Union.
