Science meets art
|
Mary C. Simmons, instructor in geology, will present “Out of the Periodic Chart and into the Fire,” focusing on the geologic and chemical processes involved in the production of pottery, at 2 p.m. Friday, October 7, in Mitchell Auditorium in the Health Professions Center. Simmons also will present the paper at the 117th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America October 16-19 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She holds a Master of Science degree in geology and a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from the University of New Mexico-Albuquerque. She is a geologist and a potter, specifically interested in the effect of kiln atmosphere on melting temperature and color of the glazes. Simmons seeks students interested in a collaborative research project to investigate the chemistry and geology inherent in the production of ceramic art.
