USI radio station WSWI AM-820, The College Rock Alternative, is sponsoring a free concert at 8 p.m. Friday, October 14, on campus.

Mock Orange, Lost Anthem, and The Inheritance will perform. While the concert is free, the Evansville Humane Society will be accepting donations. The money collected will go to both the local animal shelter and to help animals still in need from hurricane Katrina.

Headliner Mock Orange, of Evansville, received national recognition when they made it to the finals of MTV2's battle of the bands. The performance at USI is the second stop on a fall concert tour.

After the concert at USI, they will perform in the southeast, including Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. Then they head oversees to Japan, where they are already successful.

The tour will include new songs that have not yet been recorded. The band plans to get into the recording studio after going to Japan and before they head to Europe in February.

All Music Guide described Mock Orange’s sound as "Modest Mouse high on Pavement."

“I would say that we owe much more to Pavement than Modest Mouse,” said Mock Orange member Joe Asher. “We are predominantly a rock band, but a quirky rock band to be sure. We put much importance on melody in both the vocals and the guitar lines, and there is a strong technical aspect to our music as well.”

Asher said the new songs the band will perform at the USI concert are a “logical extension” of what is on the band’s CD, "Mind is Not Brain." He added “it is a bit different.”

Asher admits the band is still working on the finished sound of some of the new songs. “Almost all of the songs still have bits and pieces that need to be worked through and sometimes even the smallest change can lead to a whole new road that drastically changes the entire feel of the song,” he said.

“We are trying to take a 'less is more' approach with the new material,” said Asher “Our rule of thumb is, if it feels good, then keep it. Just because something is impressive...meaning just because you are playing a million notes a minute...doesn’t necessarily make for a good song. It’s the general feel of the song that counts. How it makes you feel when you listen to it, and how it makes us feel when we play it. A lot of times, the best songs almost write themselves.”

Another Evansville band, Lost Anthem, will perform at the October 14 concert. Lost Anthem released its first album, "Other Side of Nowhere," last year. The band also was featured in the independent film “Novem,” which has won awards at several regional independent film festivals.

The Inheritance is an up and coming band from Columbus, Indiana. “Their sound is sort of a mellow, progressive rock,” said WSWI Program Director Ryan Nash. “One of the unique things about The Inheritance is that their lead singer plays the hammer dulcimer. This gives this rock band somewhat of a 'folksy' feeling,” he added.

The concert will be held between the PAC and the Recreation and Fitness Center. The concert is part of the weekend’s Fall Fest. The evening starts with a volleyball game at 7 p.m. Friday when USI takes on Northern Kentucky University. The concert begins at 8 p.m. and will end around 11 p.m., just before Midnight Madness begins in the PAC. Midnight Madness celebrates the start of basketball season. The USI men’s and women’s basketball teams officially practice as teams starting at midnight. Activities and food will be provided starting at 11 p.m.

On the following Saturday, October 15, the USI Intramural Department will host 3-on-3 basketball and outdoor volleyball tournaments. USI also will invite prospective students to visit campus for a Southern Hospitality Day.
