Cooksey earns third GLVC cross country honor
|
University of Southern Indiana women's cross country senior Heather Cooksey (Brownsburg, Indiana) has been named the GLVC Female Runner of the Week for the third time this season. Cooksey, who is undefeated in four races this fall, led the Screaming Eagles to a second-place finish at the Saluki Invitational on Saturday. Her winning 5k-time of 17 minutes, 10.74 seconds was 43 seconds faster than that of Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Sarah Rinker. USI was the only NCAA Division II team in the field of nine teams and 81 competitors. Cooksey's award marks the fourth time this season that a USI women's runner has been named GLVC Runner of the Week and the sixth time that either a USI woman or man has been voted the GLVC Runner of the Week. Junior Missy Burgin (Sellersburg, Indiana) earned the honor last week, while USI men's senior Jesse Davis (Bloomington, Indiana) and junior Rey Alvarez (Danville, Illinois) both earned the honor earlier this season. The Eagles will be off this weekend, but will return to action October 22 when they race for the GLVC Championship in Rensselaer, Indiana. Both squads were second at last season's league meet after winning a pair of conference titles in 2003. Cooksey is looking to repeat her individual title from last season. |
