Lambda Chi Alpha benefit will collect food for hungry
|
The USI Lambda Chi Alpha chapter is sponsoring Pumpkin Bust from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, November 4 in McDonald West Recreation facility on campus in student housing. A live band, contests, and crowning of a Pumpkin Queen are highlights of this food collection benefit to help feed the poor. The bust is open to all students. Admission is one canned good or nonperishable food item. The food collection is part of Lambda Chi Alpha’s annual North American Food Drive, the largest single-day philanthropic project sponsored by a collegiate organization. Last year, on November 6, 2004, 142 Lambda Chi Alpha chapters participated in the North American Food Drive collecting 2.938 million pounds of food. The food stays in communities with Lambda Chi Alpha chapters. The Tri State Food Bank will be the recipient of food collected at the Pumpkin Bust. Bryan Schaefer, sports director for AM820, will be the guest announcer for the evening and a live band will perform. A pie-eating contest will be held and a Pumpkin Queen will be crowned from among USI sorority members. The candidate of the sorority that donates the most canned goods will be crowned the queen. The basketball and volleyball courts will be reserved for the event. Mike Halgas, publicity coordinator for the event, said, “We encourage lots of donations this year to help fill the Tri State Food Bank shelves that were depleted when the local food bank helped victims of Hurricane Katrina.” He said that persons who could not attend the Pumpkin Bust could bring canned food donations to the chapter house located at the corner of 12th Avenue and Indiana Street in Evansville. |
