USI is a course provider for Sloan Semester
|
Students from institutions displaced by Hurricane Katrina have been offered quality online education by the Sloan Consortium, an international association of colleges and universities committed to quality online education. USI is a member of the consortium, and is offering a communication class, two education classes, and a social work class for the eight-week accelerated semester called the Sloan Semester. Classes began October 10 and will end on or before January 6, 2006. Over 200 colleges and universities are participating in the Sloan Semester in collaboration with the Southern Regional Education Board and with funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The special program provides a wide range of courses to serve the learning needs of students at the community college, university, and graduate level. All courses carry degree credit from regionally accredited colleges and universities, which will transfer back to the student’s home institution. This program allows students to continue their education in this time of great need. Saxson Reasons, manager of Instructional Technology Services, said, “The immediate response by USI faculty volunteers to teach during the Sloan Semester was simply amazing. We in distance education are so thankful for faculty volunteers, administration, and campus agencies working together to make it possible for USI to participate in this endeavor. Though I am not surprised, it is so heartening that our USI community responded with this level of cooperation and dedication to student service.” |
