|
The University will observe International Education Week, November 14- 18, with a wide range of programming and activities. The national program is jointly sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to encourage study abroad and international exchange. “International Education Week is not just for international students,” said Kristine Meier, program coordinator for International Programs. “It’s for everyone to learn about the benefits of international education.” Here is the schedule: Monday, November 14 • Opening reception and performance by JAMTOWN founder John Hayden, 4-6 p.m., Carter Hall D, University Center. Hayden, of Seattle, Washington, will present an interactive musical performance using instruments from all over the world. “He uses a lot of indigenous-type instruments,” said Kristine Meier, program coordinator for International Programs. “This performance gets everyone involved.” Wednesday, November 16 • International Gift Sale, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. University Center, near the Multicultural Center. Religious Life will sponsor the sale of items from CRS Fair Trade. “They buy products from indigenous people in third world communities around the world at a fair price that is not exploitive,” Meier said. The sale will include coffee, chocolate, handcrafts, pottery, and jewelry. • Study Abroad Panel, 4:30-5:30 p.m., Room 205, University Center. USI students who have studied abroad in countries including Japan, Scotland, Korea, and France will discuss their experiences. • Global Community Movie Night: “Reflections in the Mirror,” 7:30 p.m., Ruston Hall Lounge. “Reflections in the Mirror” is a documentary film by Kathy Elpers, associate professor of social work. It features eight USI international students discussing their cultures and experiences. The event is sponsored by the Global Community and the Honors Living Learning Community. Thursday, November 17 • International Gift Sale, 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. University Center, near the Multicultural Center. • World’s Fair, 7-9 p.m. Carter Hall, University Center.
