Pitzer and Weinzapfel featured in PBS program on socialism
|
Donald Pitzer, professor of history and director of the Center for Communal Studies, and Connie Weinzapfel, director of Historic New Harmony, are featured in the first episode of the PBS documentary series, “Heaven on Earth: The Rise and Fall of Socialism,” a three-part documentary on the history of socialism. WNIN Channel 9 will show the episode at 8 p.m. Friday, November 11. Produced by New River Media, the documentary shows how socialism began as an attempt to improve the lives of workers in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. The program gives prominence to Robert Owen, who created the first socialist communal experiment in New Harmony in the mid-1820s and who coined the term “socialism” in “The Book of the New Moral World.” “He’s really a founder of the whole philosophy,” Pitzer said. |
