The 2006 Spring Faculty and Administrative Meeting will be held Tuesday, January 3, in Carter Hall in the University Center. The spring meeting differs from the fall meeting in that there is a shorter formal program, and workshops of interest to faculty and staff are offered.

“As we have become a larger community, these meetings are more important than ever,” said Dr. Linda L.M. Bennett, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “They give us an opportunity to talk with friends in other units and colleges, to meet new colleagues, and to learn about new developments across the University.

“They remind us that even as most of our work days are spent in predictable paths in our departments, we need to connect those paths from time to time and know we are on the same journey. It begins the new semester in a community spirit.”

Coffee and breakfast rolls will be served buffet-style from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. in the concourse outside Carter Hall, and the meeting will get underway at 8:30 a.m.
New faculty and administrators are asked to sit in the special section reserved for them in the front middle section of Carter Hall.

After a break from 9:30 to 9:45 a.m., “Spring Training” workshops will begin. Six workshops will be offered during two sessions, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon. All six workshops will be offered during both sessions.

Topics are:

• “The Teaching Philosophy Statement: A Chore?” presented by Dr. Sudesh Mujumdar, assistant professor of economics;

• “Evaluating Teaching through Peer Classroom Observation,” presented by Dr. Timothy Schibik, professor of economics;

• “Teaching Portfolios,” presented by Dr. Jerry Cain, professor of biology, and Dr. Kevin Celuch, professor of marketing;

• “Articulating and Assessing Learning Outcomes,” presented by Dr. Paul Parkison, assistant professor of education;

• “Anti-plagiarism Tools and Techniques,” presented by Dr. Karen Bonnell, professor of communications, and Susan Metcalf, instructional services librarian;

• “Syllabus Development: Sharing Some Lessons Learned over Time,” presented by Dr. Joseph Palladino, professor of psychology.

At noon, following the second workshop, there will be a complimentary luncheon in The Loft and The Eagles Nest.
