Most noncredit courses are free to University employees

USI Extended Services will offer the following professional development noncredit courses beginning in February: Business Etiquette Series The Business Etiquette Series includes two two-part sessions. The first addresses the importance of dressing and speaking professionally, and will be offered from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 22. • Dressing for Success: Discover the importance of appropriate dress and how to determine what is appropriate for you job and your industry’s work culture. Learn specific methods and tips for presenting a professional image that enhances your ability to perform your job effectively. • Speak Well: Make the most of first impressions by ensuring your speech reflects a level of professionalism. Learn how to avoid common grammatical errors and employ proper usage to enhance your image and improve your effectiveness. The second session concerns e-mail and voice mail etiquette, and the basics of holding effective meetings. It will be offered from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 22. • E-mail and voice mail etiquette: How quickly should you respond to an e-mail message versus a voice mail message? How much detail should you include? These are just some of the questions this course will address. Also discover the unwritten rules of e-mail etiquette and learn to create messages that prompt a quick response. • Holding effective meetings: Learn the basics for ensuring your meetings are conducted efficiently and effectively so everyone’s time is maximized. Learn how to create the right environment to encourage attendance and participation. Independent consultant Tammy Barnett will lead both sessions in the University Conference Center, Room 201 at USI. The Registration fee is $99 per session, or $179 for both sessions. Leadership Skills for Managers Leadership Skills for Managers provides realistic guidelines for raising your employees' level of competence, and providing the motivation that will turn them into self-starting achievers. In addition, the course gives valuable suggestions on communicating for results; setting the right achievement targets; developing subordinates through coaching, counseling, delegating, and performance review; coping with tensions; practicing business ethics, and more. Participants will learn to motivate employees by knowing their individual differences; establish goals that encourage innovation; handle conflicts, complaints, and grievances; and understand the many approaches to leadership, from authoritarian to democratic, from charismatic to informal. The class will be taught by Larry Bohleber, manager of the Center for Human Resources Management and instructor in business, from 6 to 9 p.m. on five Mondays, February 20-March 20, in the University Conference Center Room 201 at USI. The registration fee is $295, including the American Management Association text. USI employees are eligible for fee waivers for these and other noncredit courses, including computer courses. “Employees can take most of our programs through the noncredit fee waiver program," said Rebecca S. Deeg, program coordinator for Extended Services. “In most cases, the employee only pays for the books or materials.
