College of Business student volunteers offer free tax help
|
Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), USI student volunteers will provide free tax assistance on Saturdays, February 4-April 15 (except during spring break, March 6-10). "This is a good opportunity for people who have reasonably simple income tax returns and want to avoid having to pay for professional tax preparation services," said Brett Long, associate professor of accounting and business law. In VITA programs, the Internal Revenue Service partners with national and local organizations to provide tax services to low-to-moderate income individuals at no cost to the taxpayer. Business students will interview and prepare the taxes of those students and relatively low-income taxpayers who make an appointment for this service. Your federal and state tax returns are prepared while you wait. Preparation of returns typically takes approximately 11/2 hours to complete. The sessions will be held by appointment only in Room 2005 in the Orr Center on the following Saturdays: February 4, 11, 18, 25; March 18, 25; and April 1, 8 and 15. Individuals will be required to bring tax information, photo identification cards, and Social Security cards for themselves and their dependents. The IRS encourages electronic filing and returns will be filed electronically for those who are eligible. Please bring copies of your 2004 tax returns if they are available. To make an appointment, call the College of Business at 812/464-1718. |
