How to run for Student Government Association
|
Starting Tuesday, January 31, students who want to run for student government for the 2006-07 academic year can pick up an election packet at the University Center front desk or in the Student Government Association office located in the Dean of Students office. The packets include an application, a summary of qualifications for each office, and instructions on how to run. The applications are due by 4:30 p.m. Friday, February 24, in the Dean of Students office. Many positions are available, including executive board member positions such as SGA president, executive vice president, attorney general, academic vice president of business and finance, and executive clerk. Nick Henke, chief justice of the University Court and chair of the election committee, said that there are about 30 College representative positions, including several members-at-large. Each College has one student representative for every 300 students in the College. Henke encouraged students to run for student government. “It’s a great way to become involved on campus,” he said. “We know what’s going on at USI before other students, and we have a say in changes that happen on campus. For example, SGA gets a tour of the new library before any of the other students will see it. There are a lot of benefits like that.” In addition, some SGA positions are paid. SGA executive board members all receive a stipend. Online voting begins at 12:01 a.m. March 27 and continues through 11:59 p.m. March 29 on MyUSI. Students also may vote from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. March 27-29 at the University Center front desk. For more information, contact SGA at 812/464-1873. |
