Multicultural Center's Black History Month events fill February

The USI Multicultural Center has planned several events in recognition of Black History Month. All events except “An Evening of Jazz” are free and open to the public. Wednesday, February 8 “Blacks in Politics,” noon, University Center Rooms 201-202. This roundtable “Lunch and Learn” will feature several local African Americans who hold public offices, including Karen Ragland, Evansville-Vanderburgh County School Board, and Royce Sutton, Vanderburgh County Council. Wednesday, February 15 “Blacks in Business,” noon, University Center Rooms 201-202. This roundtable “Lunch and Learn” will feature several local African American business leaders, including Carolyn Boone Walters, president of C.C. Boone & Co. Inc.; Mike Malone of Malone & Associates, Inc. industrial and marine supplier; and Sondra Matthews, publisher of Our Times. Monday, February 20 “It’s Not Where You are From: It’s Where You are Going,” presented by James Harris, category development manager for Bristol Meyers, 7 p.m., Kleymeyer Hall, Liberal Arts Center. Sponsored by the Black Student Union. Wednesday, February 22 “Voices of Africa,” 7:30 p.m., Carter Hall, University Center. Voices of Africa is a Philadelphia-based group of women who perform song, dance, and percussion in West African and Caribbean style. The program is entertaining and informative, with discussion of the culture, history, and origin of their performances. A reception will be held following the program, which is in celebration of International Week and Black History Month. Sponsored by International Programs and Services, the Multicultural Center, Activities Programming Board, Recreation, Fitness, and Wellness, Student Development, and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. Saturday, February 25 “An Evening of Jazz” with Soul Factor, 8 to 10 p.m., Pub Banquet Hall, 1348 Division Street. To purchase advance tickets of $10 each, call the Alumni Office at 812/464-1924. Tickets are $12 at the door. Proceeds from the event benefit the USI Black Alumni Society Scholarship Fund. Tuesday, February 28 “Running Man: The Art of Raymond Johnson,” 7 p.m., Liberal Arts Center Room 2022. The artist will discuss and show his work.
