Logo contest will produce symbol for Indiana's Historic Pathways
|
Indiana’s Historic Pathways Task Force, a grass roots committee of people who live in communities along the Indiana scenic byway, is hosting a logo contest to create an identifiable symbol for the Indiana’s Historic Pathways byway to be used on letterhead, promotional materials such as brochures, and road signs. Indiana’s Historic Pathways celebrates the early settlement and transportation history of southern Indiana. Historic Southern Indiana, a community outreach program of the University of Southern Indiana, oversees the byway. There are two categories: youth (for students in grades 6 – 12) and adult. A $500 cash prize will be awarded in each category. Anyone interested in creating a logo for consideration by a panel of judges is eligible to enter the contest; contestants do not have to live within the area of the byway. The contest deadline is April 15, 2006. Indiana’s Historic Pathways passes through 15 counties: Knox, Daviess, Martin, Lawrence, Jackson, Jennings, Ripley, Dearborn, Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Washington, Crawford, Dubois, and Pike. It comprises U.S. 50 and U.S. 150 which overlap from Vincennes to Shoals. Portions of the old Buffalo Trace can be found on or south of federal highways connecting Vincennes and Clarksville. Beginning with the hooves of bison and extending through Native Americans and pioneer explorers to stagecoach and then railroad, automobile and truck, the roads stimulated the growth of towns and villages in southern Indiana. Indiana's Historic Pathways builds on the themes of westward expansion, the evolution of modes of transport, and the development of Indiana and the Midwest. Communities along Indiana’s Historic Pathways include Vincennes, Washington, Montgomery, Loogootee, Shoals, Bedford, Brownstown, Seymour, North Vernon, Versailles, Aurora, Lawrenceburg, Clarksville, New Albany, Palmyra, and Paoli. In addition, the Buffalo Trace portion also includes Crawford, Dubois, and Pike counties. Indiana’s Historic Pathways was designated as a State Scenic Byway by the Indiana Department of Transportation in December 2004. Applications, guidelines, and more information about Indiana’s Historic Pathways are available on Historic Southern Indiana’s website at www.usi.edu/hsi.
