Submissions sought for Albion Fellows Bacon Center poetry slam benefit
|
USI’s English Honors Society, Sigma Tau Delta, seeks entries for a poetry slam to raise awareness about sexual violence. Submissions are open to the public and should be postmarked or emailed by March 17 to be considered for inclusion. April is both Sexual Assault Awareness Month and National Poetry Month, and the poetry slam, “It’s About Time to Prevent Sexual Violence,” will be held from 4 to 6 p. m. Saturday, April 8, in the Browning Events Room at Central Library. A poetry slam, unlike a poetry reading, is a competitive event where the poets’ performances matter as much their poetry – in short, it is a perfect venue to convey one’s emotion, energy, and passion. In addition to raising awareness for an important cause, poets can expect celebrity judges, prize packs from local vendors for the top three finishers and, for the winning poems, publication in a national SAAM Poetry Anthology. The poetry slam audience can expect free refreshments and original and exciting poetry. All proceeds will benefit Albion Fellows Bacon Center. Poets will have three minutes to perform their piece. Submissions should relate to the prevention of sexual violence in some way. While the possible themes are limitless, suggestions include poems that celebrate survivors and victims, describe healthy relationships, express outrage, discuss sexual violence legislation, provide male perspectives, call for community activism, or speak to the next generations. As this list shows, the topic is sexual violence broadly construed and the submissions, in genre and form, may be “poetry” broadly construed. Poets should strive to balance originality and topicality, remembering the importance of performance at the actual event. Submit submissions to evansvillepoetryslam@gmail.com or c/o Shannon Wooden, Department of English, USI, 8600 University Boulevard, Evansville IN 47712. Poets should remember they will perform the submissions in three-minute blocks. To be considered, every submission must include your name, email or mailing address, and phone number. Decisions will be made after the March 17 deadline by a panel of USI students and faculty, and poets will be informed by email or letter.
