Great Lakes Valley Conference honors USI student athletes

USI senior forward Chris Thompson was named the Daktronics Great Lakes Region Player of the Year and first team All-Region in the vote by the region's sports information directors. Thompson is the first USI player to earn the Great Lakes Player of the Year award and first team All-Region honors. USI has had six prior players earn second team honors. Thompson also was named co-GLVC Player of the Year in an awards presentation during the conference basketball tournament at Roberts Stadium March 3. Thompson, who shared the award with Saint Joseph's College senior forward Sullivan Sykes, is the first USI player to win the award since 2001. In addition to the Player of the Year award, Thompson was named first team All-GLVC. The senior forward also has been named the Division II Bulletin national Player of the Month twice, the GLVC Player of the Week four times, and the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic Most Outstanding Player in 2005-06. Thompson is the Eagles' top and the GLVC's second leading scorer with 18.8 points per game and is the league's top rebounder with 9.7 rebounds per game. He has had a team-high 15 double-doubles this season, just three short of former USI All-American and GLVC Player of the Year Chris Bowles' 18 in 1991-92. The Starke, Florida, native posted a career-high 35 points in the season opener against Caldwell College and has tied a career-high by grabbing 15 rebounds in a game twice this season. Along with Thompson, senior guard Danny Gibson of Madison, Indiana and junior guard Melvin Hall of Evansville were named honorable mention All-GLVC. Gibson leads the Eagles and the GLVC with 5.2 assists per game and a 3.10 assist/turnover ratio. Hall ranks second on the team and 12th in the GLVC with 13.6 points per game and leads the team and ranks second in the conference with 77 three-point field goals made. The 77 three-point field goals are two short of the USI single-season record of 79, set by Robin Clark in 1989-90. Thompson, Gibson, and Hall are physical education majors. Women's basketball sophomore forward Jasmine Baines of Jeffersonville, Indiana earned honorable mention All-GLVC honors in a vote by the leagues' coaches. The public relations and advertising major led the Screaming Eagles with 14.0 points and 5.1 rebounds per game in 2005-06. She finished the regular season ranked fourth in the GLVC in scoring and 12th in the conference in field goal percentage (.499). She also ranked 14th in the league with 0.60 blocked shots per game. In 30 games this season, Baines scored in double figures in 24 games and had 20 or more points in five of those contests. She also posted two double-doubles. The women’s team finished the season with a 15-15 overall record and a 7-12 mark in the GLVC. |
