USI chapter of national history honor society to host conference
Alpha Delta Kappa, USI’s chapter of Phi Alpha Theta national history honors society, will host the regional conference on Saturday, March 25. This is the first time USI’s chapter, chartered in 1988, will host the conference. The special guest speaker will be Dr. Dan Scavone, USI professor emeritus of history. He will deliver a lecture entitled, “The Da Vinci Code: Fact and Fiction.” Alpha Delta Kappa president Amber Brandon will present a paper entitled, “The Effects of Guerrilla Warfare in American Military History” and vice president Charles Aull will present, “The Date of the Treaty Between Rome and the Achaean Confederation.” Students from University of Evansville, Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis, St. Joseph's College, Indiana State University, and the University of Illinois at Springfield will present papers as well. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the fee is $18, including a luncheon during which Dr. Scavone will speak. Final awards will be presented by 4 p.m. The paper presentations will take place in several rooms of the Liberal Arts Center. The luncheon will be held in University Center Rooms 201-202. “Our students, area members, and the national office of Phi Alpha Theta are extremely excited by this event,” said Dr. Jason Hardgrave, assistant professor of history and advisor for the group. “It represents an outstanding opportunity for students to make their first academic conference presentations.” Members of Alpha Delta Kappa won awards at the Illinois regional Phi Alpha Theta conference on February 25. Aull took first place in the undergraduate student paper, while Brandon won third place in the graduate student paper category. Also attending the conference from USI were Tara Ulmer and Hardgrave. Phi Alpha Theta requires applicants to have an overall GPA of 3.0, a 3.1 GPA in history courses, and to have completed 12 credit hours of history course work.
