The Stratford Festival: Four Shakespeare plays in two days
College of Liberal Arts faculty will lead an annual trip to the Stratford Festival of Canada in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, August 24-27. Theatergoers, actors, and playwrights flock to Stratford to take part in the festival. It was one of the first and is still one of the most prominent arts festivals in Canada. As of 2006, the festival runs for seven months and there are four permanent festival venues: the Festival Theatre, the Avon, the Tom Patterson Theatre, and the Studio Theatre. Although the festival was originally named for Shakespeare, and still concentrates on his works, Shakespeare is not the only playwright produced. The USI group will focus on Shakespeare’s plays, however, with tickets to see performances of Coriolanus, Twelfth Night, The Duchess of Malfi, and King Henry IV, Part I. Senior English literature major Clinton Omohundro attended the Stratford Festival with the USI group in 2004 and 2005. “Anyone who studies Shakespeare should go. It adds a whole new dimension to his work,” he said. He also appreciates the city’s culture and natural beauty. “Stratford is very European, with a lot of bookshops, pubs, and cafes,” he said. “You don’t see fast food restaurants. It’s not Americanized.” The cost for the trip is $350 per person for two persons to a room, and $300 per person for four to a room. Tickets to four plays, three nights' lodging at the Arden Park Hotel, and transportation are included. The deadline to register is Sunday, April 30. To reserve one of 15 spaces, contact Eric von Fuhrmann, associate professor of English, at 812/464-1749, or Paula von Loewenfeldt, assistant professor of English, at 812/465-1258. |
