Nursing Leadership Conference
|
An international healthcare consultant will be the speaker for the Nursing Leadership Conference at the University of Southern Indiana on April 5, 2006. The program will focus on the transformation of the healthcare leader’s role given new expectations. The program is for nurse managers, nurse leaders, nurse educators, and nurses interested in making a difference in their profession. Tim Porter-O’Grady, a senior partner in an Atlanta consulting firm, has been in health care for 35 years. He has held positions from staff nurse to senior executive in a variety of healthcare settings. He is noted for his work on shared governance models and clinical leadership. He is also an associate professor at Emory University. Over his career Dr. Porter-O’Grady has written and published journal articles and books about health leadership and systems change. According to Dr. Porter-O’Grady nurses and other healthcare providers are faced with change in the character and content of the contemporary delivery of health service. Recent therapeutics have become so mobile and digitalized that procedures can now be done in a fraction of the time they once were and completed with less complications and recovery time than ever before. These emerging models of portability and mobility are creating a demand for a different foundation for practice. This new foundation assumes that the patient will not stay long and that most of the healing experience will be done in settings other than where nurses and other providers work. The chief caregiver in these settings will be significant others and other related individuals, many of whom will have no formal training in the very care they will be asked to provide. The question for nurses and other caregivers today is no longer “ how well did I care for my patients”, instead it will be “how well informed are their caregivers and do they have access to the information and support they need to provide the necessary care and support to their loved one?” Discussion will stay centered on the forces reflecting the kinds of changes leaders can expect in a transformed healthcare environment. The objective of the conference is to have participants learn the key contextual, economic, technical, and social transformations affecting world health leaders over the next decade, define new models of leadership, and gain knowledge of ways to advance practice in the new age. The opening speech of the conference will begin at 8 a.m. in Carter Hall of the University Center at USI. The conference is expected to continue until 3:30 p.m. Registration information is available from Extended Services, 464-1989 or e-mail extserv@usi.edu. The conference is sponsored by the Indiana Organization of Nurse Executives Southwest Region, the USI College of Nursing and Health Professions, and local healthcare providers. |
