Governor’s education advisor to speak to local teachers
|
David Shane, senior education and employment advisor to Governor Mitch Daniels, will be the keynote speaker during a recognition program for math and science teachers and principals from Vanderburgh, Posey, Gibson, and Warrick counties at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11 in Carter Hall of the University Center at the University of Southern Indiana. The teachers and principals will be recognized for the work they do promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs and careers. Shane is president and chief operating officer of LDI, Ltd., LLC, a diversified holding company, and he has 20 years of experience in the legal field. His other passion has been education. In 1996, he accepted leadership of Community Leaders Allied for Superior Schools (CLASS), dedicated to improving education achievement results in Central Indiana schools and schools throughout the state. He serves on advisory boards for private and public institutions of higher education in the state. Dr. Scott Gordon, dean of the Pott College of Science and Engineering, will introduce initiatives nationally, state-wide, and locally to help increase the number of students choosing STEM careers. This is a topic of national concern that has been discussed in recent hearings in Washington, D.C. and in news across the United States. This country’s competitive edge in global economy and the strength of the labor force are increasingly dependent on continuing to produce a steady supply of young people well prepared in science and mathematics. Discussions will follow about how STEM initiatives can improve Indiana’s economy, workforce, and more. The program is sponsored by the Pott College of Science and Engineering. |
