Seven "Getting to the Core" workshop participants chosen
|
Seven faculty members have been selected as participants in this year’s workshop on “Getting to the Core: Teaching and Learning Enhancement in the University Core Curriculum.” The workshop will run Wednesday through Friday, May 10-12, in Room 2002 in the Liberal Arts Center. Participants will receive stipends and lunches as part of a grant from the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence. They are: Elizabeth Drake-Boyt, instructor of humanities; Mary Ferley, instructor of English; Jason Hardgrave, assistant professor of history; Robin Sermersheim, instructor of mathematics; Otis Stanley, instructor of health services; Kevin Valadares, assistant professor of health services; and Mara Beth Womack, instructor in dental assisting/hygiene. Participants will serve as “students” in three commonly-taken Core courses: Philosophy 201, Sociology 121, and Math 108, which will be taught by teaching leaders Maurice Hamington, assistant professor of philosophy; Chuck Petranek, professor of sociology; and Judy Wells, instructor in mathematics, respectively. Each leader will present three class hours of material from his/her course, with follow up discussions focusing on pedagogical techniques observed and ways of incorporating them into the participants’ own classes. In addition, participants will see first hand what goes on in these classes, leading to more helpful advising of students and more opportunities for connections and overlap among Core courses. Other interested faculty are welcome to attend any or all of the workshop sessions (excepting the luncheons) on a volunteer basis, but must register as soon as possible. To register or for more information, contact Dr. John Gottcent, director of the University Core Curriculum, at 812/464-1750. |
