Nicholas Mason was awarded Best of Show for his ceramic and wood piece, “?,” during the reception and awards ceremony for the 36th Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition on April 9.

Featuring paintings, ceramics, prints, sculpture, jewelry, video, and more, the exhibition upholds the high standards set annually by USI students. It is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Sunday, April 16, in the University Conference Center.

In her statement, juror Ruth Esserman wrote, “The experience of being able to visit the University of Southern Indiana and jury your annual student show was exhilarating and an eye-opener. The range and quality of work in all areas was impressive. It’s always a challenge to select the work to be included in the show – knowing that not all can be exhibited. Congratulations on the quality of all the entries.”

Esserman is an artist and a national leader in art education. She founded the nationally-known Focus on the Arts program and has served as president and chair of the Illinois Arts Education Association, chair and member of the board of directors of the National Art Education Association, and is a “Distinguished Fellow” of both organizations. Her paintings and drawings have been included in numerous national exhibitions.

“The prize winners just seemed to step up and announce themselves,” she wrote. “They represent a level of professionalism you can be proud of. Thanks to all the staff and students who were so welcoming and kind. I take home a new understanding and respect for your campus, staff and student body.”
