|
Students in the College of Nursing and Health Professions excelled in two regional competitions in April. USI Respiratory Therapy Program students competed in the Region II for Respiratory Care Sputum Bowl April 23- 24 in Covington, Kentucky. The Sputum Bowl is a professional academic competition pitting teams from respiratory care programs from Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. Led by Robert Hooper, director of the program, and Tony Schmitt, assistant professor of respiratory therapy, the team members were Dayna Barrett, Candice Durall, Brittany Hamer, and Kristie Watson representing the second-year class, and Hannah Anderson, Scott Gillespie, Amber Rainey, and Christie Turley representing the first-year class. Both teams qualified for the championship match for their respective divisions. The first-year team finished as runner-up and the second-year team won the advanced division championship. As the winning team, the second-year students received the traveling Sputum Bowl trophy and $500 for the program. For the second year in a row, USI undergraduate nursing students won the Critical Care Challenge sponsored by the Tri-State Chapter of the Association of Critical Care Nurses. USI students Sara Kraft, Mike Jurgensen, Lyndsey Sitzman, Natalie Scherle, Kim Burrow, Brenda Beck, Cassie Bartelt, Stephanie Ziliak, Libby Spaeti, and Randa Wade competed against nursing programs from the University of Evansville, IVY Tech, and Henderson Community College on April 13. The nursing staffs of five area hospitals competed against each other, as well. Over 200 area nurses were in attendance. Teams scored points by correctly answering critical care questions. According to Rita Winters, instructor in nursing, USI students earned enough points to beat three of the five hospitals in the competition, in addition to winning the competition against the other nursing programs. Both the Critical Care Challenge and the Sputum Bowl trophies are on display in the College of Nursing and Health Professions. |
